Exclusive pumping is gaining popularity among busy moms, moms of twins, and those whose babies struggle with latching. Whether you’re returning to work, traveling, or just finding bottle-feeding more manageable, exclusive pumping can provide your baby with nutritious breast milk at every meal.
Pumping Schedules
Consistency is key when it comes to exclusive pumping. Aim to pump every 3 hours to meet your baby’s milk needs, especially in the early postpartum days. Each session should last 20-25 minutes, and using an electric pump with a hands-free pumping bra can make the process more efficient. Be prepared to spend around 120 minutes a day pumping and remember to pump during the night, even if your baby sleeps through it.
Storage
Proper storage of your breast milk is crucial. Freshly pumped milk can be kept at room temperature for up to 4 hours and in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Label all stored milk to avoid spoilage. Once you have a supply in the fridge, start freezing your milk. A handy storage tip is to use a large mason jar or sealed pitcher to collect milk throughout the day and then transfer it into storage bags. Store 3-4 oz per bag to minimize waste.
