Breastfeeding is the most beneficial nutrition for babies for the first year of life (and beyond). Your milk is tailor-made to your baby’s needs each time you express. The fact is, even when you go shopping for groceries or dine in to enjoy a meal, chances are, your breastfed baby will get hungry. So, let’s dive into breastfeeding in public. Feeding patterns can be unpredictable at times, especially during the newborn stage. Many mothers feel self-conscious about breastfeeding in public, while others feel completely comfortable feeding in public because they are nurturing their baby. Thankfully, breastfeeding in public is legal and protected, and many products are designed for the modest mother in mind, to breastfeed in public comfortably.
Laws surrounding breastfeeding in public
In the USA, breastfeeding in public is legal in all 50 states. In many other countries, no law exists because feeding anywhere is more of the norm. The US rules surrounding breastfeeding include:
- Mothers are protected to allow breastfeeding anywhere they are allowed to be
- Mothers can choose whether they want to use a nursing cover or not, there is no law preventing breast exposure while breastfeeding
- Breastfeeding is protected by law, and you should not be made to feel uncomfortable when breastfeeding in public.
- Some state specific wordings vary, so you can check your specific state if you have any concerns
If you are going out and prefer to nurse in a private setting, many places offer private nursing rooms for mothers, such as certain retailers like Target and Ikea, and at hospitals and airports. You can always call beforehand, this will help you to know what to expect and to be prepared if there is not a private space for you to breastfeed. And remember that the law protects you from having to nurse in the bathroom. Who wants to eat in there?
Remember, most of the time, while the baby is nursing, no one can see your nipple. If you want to avoid people getting a show after baby unlatches, practice maneuvering your shirt quickly once baby lets go, or simply cover with your hand.
Choosing the right fit!
- Wear loose layers for easy access and extra coverage!
- Try the 2 shirt method of wearing a tank top underneath in case you don’t want your tummy to show
- Invest in a practical, supportive nursing bra
- Consider purchasing a nursing cover

I love this stylish, lightweight nursing cover, which is easy to wear over a tank top for easy, on-the-go nursing. One of my favorite things about the Gold Mama cover is the lifetime warranty on this product, so if it rips or tears, they will replace it at no cost.
This nursing cover is an affordable option for a tight budget. I love that it has an adjustable strap to fit any body type. And its price tag of only $19.99 for two is a huge steal!
